High-Density-Polyethylene (HDPE) Construction System
This design intent for a wall-construction system made from molded HDPE, similar to police barriers, is downloadable as via .obj file for rendering and modelling or additional development and prototyping.
AGENCY IMPACT: the wall construction system is based on police crowd control and riot response barriers, often made of HDPE and secured in place using either water or sand ballast. The design of this system repurposes the same technology used for oppression for the construction of single- or two-story housing with useful features: the HDPE modules allow for vacuum insulation of the wall cavity and attachment of interior and exterior finishes by connecting dimensional lumber furring strips to the module face. The design features seven parts, each designed to connect to the others removable steel tubing:
-A 4-Foot Length Wall Module
-A 6-Foot Length Wall Module
-A 4-Foot Length Spandrel/Lintel Module
-A 6-Foot Length Spandrel/Lintel Module
-An End-Cap Module for Doors and Wall Terminations
-Long and Short Molded HDPE Retention Bolts for connecting framing to modules.
The modules share police barriers’ advantages of being lightweight until installed, and allowing index-able, non-90 degree corners thanks to a molded HDPE angle guide on each module.
